It would please me to have all of my media files to be on one machine. I want to load all of my workout videos from DVD onto a server and be able to program a custom work out that flows from the upper body section of one video, to the yoga section of another video. Also, I’d like all of our music files to be there so I could pop things on my collection of iPods.
Answer me this oh wise ones.
- What should that media server run?
- Can I connect the server to the wireless router or should it go wired? Moving the router would be a hassle but not apocalyptic.
- What file format should stuff be saved in for excellent quality?
Facts that may be relevant:
- The current setup. We’ve got the big-biggity-big plasma, hd-cable box, receiver, wii, multi-region blu, multi-region HD-DVD, laser disc, (Yeah, we love the dead formats! Word problems in latin using an abacus…) (And if you’re a stranger we’ve got a home security system and big dogs!)
- We’ve also got a spare PC that about 2 years old currently running windows media server. Also several external hard drives.
- I hate iTunes and it’s slowness.
- My cable and internet are both through Cox Cable.
- Quality is an issue. Steve is persnickety on this stuff. He really loves movies and music so high quality is important. Me, not so much.
- We probably won’t try to load his thousands of movies on the server, just my 200 or so workout videos.

I need to exercise more. I’m thinking about doing some exercising at home but feel like I need the help of a video or book. Can you recommend any thing?
We have a queen size pillow top mattress bought in 2003 with a two year old 3″ memory foam pad on top. It’s recently developed two large canyons where we sleep, and our bodies are unhappy every morning when we wake up.
We want to replace it, but I’d really like to wait until we move to a bigger space to do that so we can keep this one as a guest bed. Can we extend the life of this one somehow? Or should we suck it up and buy a new one now? If we should buy, any recommendations on what/where?
Is there any particular site you just love for finding cheap airfare? Any good ways to watch & be notified if prices drop?
thanks!!
I was hoping the Apple offering would sweep me off my feet and we’d live happily-ever-after. The slipper didn’t fit; the iPad did not impress.
- I want support for multiple file types, including free books from the library. (That knocks out the Kindle)
- Intelligent file organization. (Nook, we hardly knew ye.)
- A clear digital ink screen. (Bu-bye touchscreen Sony’s)
- Good battery life is a must, but wireless isn’t absolutely required.
Someday will my eReader prince come? Any hot eReaders I should meet for a potential long-term relationship?
If you are a tea drinker, you know that temperature makes a difference, especially for white and green teas. If the water is too hot (over 180 degrees in most cases) then the tea comes out bitter. (The Fragrant Leaf explains why quite nicely.)
I enjoy a cup of Genmaicha in the morning, and this Pino Digital Kettle Pro has improved my tea drinking experience immensely. There are a variety of electric temperature controlled kettles on the market. I chose this one for simplicity of design, cost and temperature variability control. It has outperformed my expectations.
