Bad Bed Bummer

We have a queen size pillow top mattress bought in 2003 with a two year old 3″ memory foam pad on top. It’s recently developed two large canyons where we sleep, and our bodies are unhappy every morning when we wake up.

We want to replace it, but I’d really like to wait until we move to a bigger space to do that so we can keep this one as a guest bed. Can we extend the life of this one somehow? Or should we suck it up and buy a new one now? If we should buy, any recommendations on what/where?

  1. You’re probably already doing what we’re having to do with ours: regularly turn the mattress 180 degrees (swapping head to foot) in hopes the ass canyon will puff back up. Our pillowtop has an inch of memory foam in it, and I hate the whole rig – my pillows sitting there all day will leave an identifiable dent.

Since they’re cheap, you might try buying an egg crate mattress topper and cutting out “fills” for the dents, the put the memory foam on top of that. Possibly a loose-fill featherbed topper could be sculpted some to fill them in.

I am pretty sure I will not buy another bed with a pillow top. I’d rather top it myself and have more control than this. When we got this one, we waited for Rooms To Go to have their 18 months no interest special and did that, but frankly their mattress selection was not all that great, and most of them were extensively pillow-topped.

  2. Gosh this is a bummer. Nothing is worse than waking up hurting in the morning. My advice is that when you have the money, go to a mattress store and buy the most expensive mattress you feel comfortable on in the store. Then make sure they have a decent return policy so after you sleep on it for a few nights you can switch if necessary.

  3. That’s a warranty issue. Most beds have a 10 year warranty (or longer). Give a call to the manufacturer. The manufacturer might not give you the purchase price, because the usually prorate the warranty. Still, it’s free money.

Some people like spelunking in the those caves of sweat that are foam mattresses. Personally I think they are miserable, but to each his own.

If you decide to buy a new mattress there’s a Simmons or Sealy factory warehouse off 35 in Dallas. Good deals.
