I need to exercise more. I’m thinking about doing some exercising at home but feel like I need the help of a video or book. Can you recommend any thing?

There was one time in my life that I took my shirt off and someone remarked that I was “ripped”. (Thanks for that, Tina).
I don’t know if I was ripped, but I wasn’t embarrassed, and it was because of AM / PM Yoga by Rodney Yee. Mostly the AM, I think.
Lots of the people I follow on Twitter are fans of the 30 Day Shred with Jillian Michaels. I’m too chicken.
That said, I do want a podcast of Jillian just yelling at me so I’d work out harder (or at all).
There are also a lot of workout titles for the Wii if you have that. I have a couple of them and can recommend a few if you’re interested.
Bryan & Leia, thanks for the recommendations. Those both look good! Leia, we are borrowing a Wii from a friend (on the long-term borrow plan) so I would be interested in what you suggest. However, we don’t have a balance board. Is that a deal breaker?
I have EA Sports Active, which doesn’t use the board and comes with the attachments you need. Unfortunately, I think the controls are not sensitive enough, and during the right-knee-bend (never the left one), it would keep me bending for too long, and I nearly kicked the Wii out of frustration.
You’re right in my wheelhouse. What equipment do you have?
• If you have weights, then you can’t beat Cathe (not at all annoying), or Chalean Extreme (can be annoying, but good). A lot of people like P90X, but that’s like 90 minutes a day of intense workouts, 6 days per week.
• If you have an aerobics step, then Cathe is great for non-dancy stuff. For dancy stuff Christi Taylor. Christi has great music too.
• For yoga, Steve Ross’s TV show Inhale is on the Oprah network. His really fun. By the way, I’ve taken Steve’s classes live too and that photo of him is totally photoshopped. His teeth aren’t nearly the scary-capped.
• I’d stay away from The Firm tapes, because the new ones are pretty easy but need lots of equipment which they will sell your for a million dollars. The old ones are tougher, but very dated. Think leotards and black stockings.
• For the wii, we like Outdoor Adventure to work up a bit of sweat.
For workout video purchases, Collage Video is fantastic – fast and the people there do all the videos. If you call, they’ll be able to tell you a lot about each title.
Wow Christine. That is a list of goodness.
I got the EA and am waiting until my knee is a little more healed. But now I’m going to look at your expansive list. Man you are an exercise guru-esse.
On the Wii, we have EA Active which is balance board optional. That is a pretty fun one, and I wish I had stuck to the 30 day challenge it has.
Before EA Active came out, my favorite was My Fitness Coach. It is more like a choose your own adventure workout DVD. You can customize the workout as you go if you want something harder or lighter. It doesn’t take advantage of the controls like EA Active does, but is more customizable than a regular DVD workout. Also, at $16, it’s competitive with a DVD.
I haven’t tried the Biggest Loser game, though it has decent reviews. I wish it had online competition, which would be a fun way to try to get in shape.
These all look like great suggestions! I’ve ordered AM / PM Yoge & 30 Day Shred to start. Hopefully I’ll get motivated and enjoy these. Then I’ll move on to a few of the other suggestions. Thanks, everyone!
